“Good things come to those who squat.” Being that we love squats, we’re thankful we went to Monica’s Barre3 class!  And let us tell you how difficult it was to get ourselves to class on Monday night. Not only had it been raining for 5 consecutive days, and we hadn’t seen the sun in too long to remember, but this class is in a brand new shopping center next to Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza and El Sarape. On a rainy night when we didn’t want to get out of our pajamas, we had to choose between pizza, margaritas, and barre class. Oh man, were we proud of our discipline.  And our husbands say we never make the right decision!

When we first stepped into Barre3, we received a friendly greeting from the woman at the front desk, and also the instructor, Monica.  We had to fill out a quick informational form, and then we were given a quick tour of the studio, which encompassed lockers, bathrooms, and a kids’ corner with toys and books. When we entered the studio, Monica came right up to us and asked us a short series of questions regarding if we are new to barre, if we have any areas on our bodies that are hurt, what we would like to work on, and if we had any questions..  We really loved this about her because it showed she had genuine interest in her clients, and was there to help us get the workout we desired. We were then instructed to get the various props – a ball, towel, weights, a band, and a mat, and the class started.

We began with a warm up, that consisted of light stretching and movements, and a lot of squats!  Our thighs were burning from all of the squats, but it felt so good! Maybe now our lifted booty’s will look better in our “mom” jeans, and maybe our husbands will even notice!  We also knew we were burning major calories with this exercise segment because our heart rates were super elevated. Remember when our heart rates used to become elevated from looking at our husbands? Now it’s all about getting a great work out and burning those calories. The more the better!  

Throughout the class, Monica mixed up the exercises to work out our thighs, glutes, arms, and core. During each new exercise, she offered modifications, which was really helpful. Not everyone in the class was on the same level, so this was great to have those options. Monica was also very in tune with her class, and came over to help out those who needed it.  Imagine if there were modifications for parenting? Especially for those of us moms, who some days are just trying to get by!

Towards the end of the class, we focused on stretching. Monica said that this is an essential part of the workout, and there is always time in the class made for stretching.  We love stretching after a workout because our muscles are always so fatigued. This also helps make our muscles longer and leaner. Hey, leaner anything has to be an improvement, right?    

In the last few minutes of the class, we took time to focus on our breathing. She asked us how often we are able to do nothing, and focus on our breathing.  At that point, we looked at each other and laughed. Do nothing and focus on our breathing? It’s hard to focus on your breathing when the laundry is piling up, dishes are in the sink, your kids need to be fed, and your husband is laying on the couch watching football (oh yay, football is back).  We really appreciated this part of the class, and the fact Monica made time for this. As working moms, we really don’t ever get this opportunity, unless we make time for it, as we did the other night at Barre3.

This class is a great option for working moms.  Class is at 7:00 PM and is only 60 minutes. The class works every part of our bodies, and left us feeling strong and toned! When speaking with Monica after class, she explained to us how this class targets all demographics – it offers low impact exercises that work deep into your muscles.  Your workouts are what you make of them. Barre3 also offers online classes in those instances you are unable to get out of the house. This is very valuable being a working mom because sometimes time is not in our favor. Sometimes our kids are sick, or our husbands can’t be home to take over, or maybe it’s raining and we just don’t want to leave the house (shocking… It has been raining every day lately!), so having an online option is advantageous.
