Yoga sculpt is where it’s at! We were lucky enough to take Karen’s 9:15 am class this past Sunday, and we are still feeling the effects of the amazing workout! We really should have milked being sore, so we could get out of our “mom” duties… kidding. One minor, or major depending on how you look at it, point we want to add is that it is hot yoga. Even though it says so in the description on the website, us moms, definitely missed that one! Can we blame it on “mom brain” again? Or maybe we can take a page out of our husbands’ book and pretend we didn’t see it. In any case… bring a towel! You’ll need it. It was not as hot as other hot yoga classes we have taken (better for us), but it was definitely hot. Karen even gave us the option as to whether we wanted the heat lamps turned off in the middle of class. This was a definite “yes” for us, since we were now using our sweatshirts as towels. Bring that towel, moms!
Before class started, Karen introduced herself to us and let us know which props we needed – light weights and a set of blocks. We each grabbed 3 lbs weights, and we would say that was sufficient. The exercises we did included high repetitions, so the light weights were perfect. The blocks were there in case we needed them, but neither of us used them. Class started off with us in child’s pose, a pose we are used to, and we focused on our breath. After some breathing exercises, class took off at a high speed. We have both taken power yoga before, and we remembered why we like it so much! The way the class was constructed was perfect, and we loved the speed – down dogs, planks, push-ups, you name it! Each exercise was better than the next, and we really felt confident in our moves. Towards the end of class, Karen gave us a few free minutes to practice our handstands or inversions. This was something we have not done before, and was a really cool element to the class. We both tried this, one of us was successful, one of us was not. Practice makes perfect, as we tell our kids! We will be ready next time!
At the end of class, we stretched, focused on our breathing again, and were all given a frozen lavender towel. This is the first class we have experienced this in, and we loved it! It was like we were giving ourselves a little, mini facial, after a hard workout. We can’t even remember the last time we were able to treat ourselves to a spa facial… it’s hard enough to get a mani-pedi! Lavender towel for the win! Talk about relaxation… do you think this would work on our kids at bedtime? Stay tuned for “mom spa”.
We feel this class is a great addition to a working mom’s routine. It is held on Sundays at 9:15 am, is only 60 minutes, and works your whole body. The class is challenging, but doable due to the modifications Karen offered. She worked the class so that all levels can participate, which is a really important element when taking a group fitness class. Karen also is very knowledgeable, and knows her class. Since we were new, she paid us extra attention. Moms, it’s worth it to bargain with your husbands’, to take the kids out for an hour, to go and take this class! Maybe even allow them a hour of undisturbed football-watching later in the day. We call that a win-win.
