We’ll be honest… one of us is scarred from hot yoga, so every time we hear it, we fear the worst.  Don’t get us wrong, we love to sweat it out, but we don’t want to feel like we’re going to pass out.  Have no fear…we found a perfect class that made us sweat, stretch, and pose like yoga pros! Hot Power Fusion at Core Power Yoga is where it’s at.  

We arrived about 15 minutes prior to class to give us enough time to meet the instructor, sign in, get a quick tour of the place (which was gorgeous) and discuss the class.  We’ve learned our lesson on preparation for class, so we were well equipped with mats, towels, and insulated water bottles. Every time we “pack” for a class from now on, we make sure we have those three things, just in case!  Being moms, we are pro-packers when it comes to leaving the house – snacks, drinks, books, toys, diapers, wipes, change of clothes… the list goes on! Now, if only we could get our husbands to listen to us when we say how important it is to plan.  We are now applying those skills to our preparedness for working out. When we first entered the studio, it was hot (not too hot), dimly lit by candles, and had nice soothing music playing. It felt serene and calming. We laid out our mats, closed our eyes, and relaxed until class started.  After a long hard day at work, preparing our kids’ dinner, and getting ourselves ready and out of the house, we needed these few minutes of calm and relaxation before starting our yoga workout.

Tara was our instructor and she was fantastic, motivating, and encouraging!  She started off class by telling us to let go of our day, our weekend, or whatever else was bothering us. Tonight was for us, and we deserved that time to ourselves. Next, we focused on some breathing exercises, and then right into the workout!  Tara walked us through each and every pose, including standing bow, crow, and eagle, while offering several modifications for each one. She was really attuned to her class, and corrected our form from time to time. The flow of her class was just what we needed. It was the perfect balance of power yoga (the quick flow of poses is what we crave), and the detoxifying characteristics of hot yoga. We needed to sweat out all of that wine we drank last weekend! The different poses definitely had us sweating as we were challenging ourselves to hold longer poses and focus on our balance. Throughout the class, the poses targeted so many areas of our bodies – core, arms, legs, etc. We really felt the full body workout we had the next day.  We can usually tell how great the workout was by how we feel in 24 hours. This one deserves a prize.

Towards the end of class Tara gave us time to play around a little and challenge ourselves with some balance poses. One of us finally got crow pose (for like two seconds, but hey, that still counts right?). Progress is progress. We are relatively new to yoga (we probably can’t use this excuse for too much longer), and we are starting to understand why they call it “practicing” yoga. Besides being a great workout, it takes lots of dedication and practice. A lot of the poses appear easy… but they are not. They take a great deal of strength and balance. To end the class, Tara brought us back to our breaths, and focused on stretching. She gave us a quick massage to help us get into the stretches even more by pressing our hips down and lengthening the neck. We ended class the same way we started, by continuing to let go of our negative feelings. We don’t know about all of you, but as soon as we realized class was ending we thought about what else needs to be done when we get home.  Did our husbands clean up? Were the kids bathed? Were lunches made for tomorrow? Does the laundry need to be folded? Maybe we need to take yoga more, to help us continuously let go of our negative feelings.

So, does this class fit the working mom mold?  YES! Class didn’t start until 7:30, which gave us more time after work for our mom duties. Also, the class was only 60 minutes, which got us out of there and home by 9:00 PM (of course we could have been home sooner, but it is always fun to talk and catch up after).  Another win… since it was later in the night, we missed the kids’ bedtime routine! Should we be as happy as we are about that?! Maybe not, but we found a hilarious quote that summarizes our mom struggle: “Putting a toddler to bed, who ‘isn’t tired’ is like putting your drunk friend to bed. There’s singing to themselves, requesting water, incoherent babble, crying, some weird yoga poses, hiccups, and then they pass out.” That’s all we have for you, mamas!
