Name: Calhoun Athletic Company
Location: Trooper, PA
Instructor: Adam – We met Adam when we took his class at Orangetheory, and he was amazing at both places. He is extremely knowledgeable, and you can tell that fitness is his passion. Not only did he come around and help with form when needed, he was also very complimentary and let us know when we were doing a good job. At one point he was walked around the room and just stopped and said “I have nothing to correct for any of you guys, so I’m just going to say ‘keep up the good work!’”
Exercise Type: Fit Team Training – It was similar to circuit training classes we had previously taken. To start, we were broke up into groups of 3. These were random, but we just kind of fell into place depending on which station we were closest to. Next, we chose a station (consisting of 3 exercises) to start at. We did each exercise for a minute, then we rotated to the other two exercises all within that same station. We did this 3 times before switching off to the next station. Each exercise and station were challenging, and we were happy to switch on and off to give our bodies a break when needed. A few examples of the exercises were box step ups, squats with weights, sled pushes and pulls, planks, mountain climbers, and jumping rope. Again with the jumping rope… struggle city! We were given the option to do jumping jacks if we didn’t want to jump rope, which most people took. We really should practice jumping rope though, not only is it great cardio, we should know how to do it to teach our kids one day.
Place: Gym – The Gym and Tan Line Studio
Day of the Week: Wednesday
Time: 7:45 – 8:45 PM – At first, we thought, “OMG this is so late!,” but we realized that the later the class, the more time we are able to spend with our families after work. Our kids were only up for a little while after we left to go to class, so we didn’t feel guilty about missing that quality time with them.
Price: First class is FREE; Variety of packages and memberships available; Drop in $12
What to Wear: T-shirt/tank top; leggings/shorts; sneakers
What to Bring: Water; towel (optional)
What is Provided: Weights, bands, medicine balls, etc.
Level of Experience: All levels seen throughout the class
Gender Majority: 50/50
Age Group: 20’s and 30’s – we are in our early-30’s and we were probably the oldest in the class, which wasn’t a bad thing. The younger people have more energy than us, which made us work extra hard (in turn, more calories burned!)
Unique Features: Yes, two come to mind. The class was on the smaller side, so we got a lot of one-on-one training, which was so beneficial for us. It is really important to have proper form, so we don’t hurt ourselves. The second unique feature took place at the end of class. After we did our circuit training, Adam had us each hop on a bike/elliptical. The machine really looked like a hybrid of the two. It had pedals and a seat like a bike, but the handlebars moved front and back like an elliptical. Anyway, Adam had us do a group challenge, where we had to take 10 seconds of all out effort, 20 seconds off, then 10 seconds again. At first we thought the 10 seconds was a joke… it wasn’t. We were dying. Our heart rates were elevated, and we felt those calories being burned!
Thank you so much for having us! Adam, you are truly a great motivator, and you kept these moms feeling young for the night. Men, women, moms, dads, whoever… you should check out Calhoun Athletic Company! You will get a fantastic workout, and have fun while doing it.
